August 20th, 2020 - Goodies from Awaji Island arrived at YVR!!
Last year when we first decided to source for wakame seaweed in Japan and stumbled across one of Awaji Island’s (淡路島) speciality. It is Shirasu シラス (whitebait) and Chirimen Jako ちりめんじゃこ (dried whitebait). We have just received a sample shipment from Japan today and we have 15 packs of shirasu and 8 packs of chirimen available on our website.
Shirasu is lightly boiled and ready to eat. As it is considered a half sashimi you can eat as is and it is perfect to go with plain rice. As it is a fresh product, once you defrost it you should finish it within 3-4 days. However, You can always divide them into 2-3 portions and keep them in the freezer for longer storage. As a matter of fact our family of 5 just finished half a pack of 300g. It is so good without a trace of fishiness it is that fresh!

Chirimen Jako is exactly the same fish as shirasu but sun dried. Due to the fact that it is dehydrated it can be stored in the fridge for up to 3-4 weeks. You can take out and cook what you need and there are lots and lots of recipes online available for it. I’ve previously made fried rice and steamed eggs with it please see photos.

Both Shirasu and Chirimen along with our preserved wakame seaweed are from the exact same fish farmer who has been in business for over 30 years. Therefore, what we are getting is farmer direct! Guarantee best quality and freshness!
We have also refilled our supply of Awaji Island wakame seaweed. There’s a slight price adjustment due to higher cost on logistics from the pandemic. Below are some instructions on how to clean and enjoy freshly preserved wakame seaweed.
